Quick answer
5 Inch Gutters in Irvine, CA: 5 inch K-style seamless gutters from The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Irvine fit most single-family roofs in South Orange County. We form them on site, pair them with 2×3 or 3×4 inch downspouts depending on roof area, and confirm the size against your roof before the machine runs. Call (949) 994-4410 or book online.
Most homes in South Orange County started out with 5 inch gutters, and for many of them that is still the right call. Single-story ranch homes in Costa Mesa and Lake Forest, and the smaller roof sections on plenty of Irvine village homes, drain comfortably into a well-hung 5 inch run with properly placed downspouts.
Tile is where it takes a closer look. Tile roofs can need a wider gutter to catch what comes off them, so we check each section before settling on 5 inch and move only the sections that need it up to 6 inch gutters.
5 inch gutters in South County
Where 5 inch still does the job, and where it runs out of room
A well-hung 5 inch gutter is the right, lower-cost answer for plenty of South County roof sections. Here is how to tell which of yours qualify, and how to get more out of the ones you already have.
The 5 inch gutter earns its keep on roof sections that are small, simple and on their own. A single-story eave on a ranch home in Costa Mesa or Lake Forest, a detached garage, a porch roof over the front door: these send a modest amount of water to the gutter, and a 5 inch run with properly placed downspouts carries it without strain.
Where it runs out of room is anywhere the roof concentrates water. An inside valley, a lower roof sitting under a second-story gutter, a long run with only one spot for a downspout. Those are the sections we see spill first in a winter storm, and they are the ones we move to 6 inch.
The good news is that a 5 inch run with an outlet problem can often be fixed without replacing the gutter. Swapping a 2×3 downspout for a 3×4, or adding a second downspout to split a long run, is a smaller job than a new system and frequently solves the overflow.
A section-by-section check
| Roof section | 5 inch? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Single-story eave under 40 feet with its own downspout | Usually yes | Modest roof area and a short trip to the outlet |
| Detached garage, shed or porch roof | Usually yes | Small area with nothing draining into it |
| Run over 40 feet with room for two downspouts | Often yes | The second outlet halves the distance water has to travel |
| Run over 40 feet with room for only one downspout | No, go 6 inch | One outlet cannot keep pace with that much gutter |
| Lower roof under an upper gutter | No, go 6 inch | It carries two roofs’ worth of water at once |
| Inside valley on a tile roof | Usually 6 inch | Water arrives fast and lands in one spot |
Keeping a 5 inch system working through the rainy season
- Have the troughs and outlets cleared in fall, after the Santa Ana winds have blown in their eucalyptus leaves and before the first storm.
- Check the outlets most of all. Jacaranda blossom and palm litter collect at the downspout opening, and a half-blocked outlet turns a right-sized gutter into an overflowing one.
- Look for sags. A run that has dropped between hangers holds water and debris in the low spot.
- Make sure every downspout ends in an elbow that sends water away from the slab, not into the planter against the wall.
- If you are under heavy trees, add a guard so the smaller trough stays open between cleanings.
When the answer is a bigger outlet, not a bigger gutter
Not every overflow call in Irvine or Mission Viejo ends in new gutters. Sometimes the trough is fine and the exits are the bottleneck. If a run spills near its outlet but the trough itself is not overtopping along its length, a 3×4 downspout or one more downspout in the right place is usually the fix. When the trough itself is too small, we will say so and show you the 6 inch gutter option for just those sections. Our gutter size guide walks through how the two compare across a whole house.
Making a new 5 inch run match the street
On HOA streets in Irvine, Ladera Ranch and Aliso Viejo, a new gutter is judged as much by color as by function. We form 5 inch runs in colored aluminum so they match the trim, and a pre-season gutter cleaning or a set of BroGuard gutter guards keeps them flowing once they are up.

Run it against a few rules. Runs under 40 feet need at least one downspout, runs over 40 feet need two or more, the gutter should not overflow in average rain, and the roof should be asphalt shingle with a proper drip edge. Since so many South County roofs are concrete or clay tile, that last rule is where a lot of homes here point toward 6 inch instead.
Do not use them on a lower roof that catches runoff from an upper roof’s gutter, because the lower run carries both loads and overflows in a heavy storm. You see that layout on plenty of two-story homes in master-planned neighborhoods, with a first-floor roof tucked under the main one. Large, steep, tile or metal roof sections are also better off with 6 inch.
They cost less than 6 inch and handle average rainfall well, which makes them good value on roofs that fit the guidelines. Here we still size for the hard winter storms rather than the dry months, so your Solutionist will flag any section that needs more capacity.
2×3 inch is the standard downspout for a 5 inch gutter. On a larger roof area we can pair it with a 3×4 inch downspout instead, an easy way to move more water without changing the gutter.
We form 5 inch seamless gutters in K-style, the profile on most South County homes, and half-round is available as well. Colored aluminum comes in a wide range of baked-on finishes, which helps when an HOA in Ladera Ranch or Rancho Santa Margarita expects the gutter to match the trim. Copper and steel are options too.
On most houses, yes. Bigger gutters have grown more popular, but a 5 inch K-style remains a solid, cost-effective choice where the roof fits its limits. A Solutionist confirms it on site during your free estimate.
