Quick answer
Gutter Sizes in Irvine, CA: The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Irvine forms 5, 6 and 7 inch seamless gutters on site. 5 inch suits most single-family roofs, 6 inch carries roughly 40 percent more water for large, steep or tile roofs, and 7 inch is for commercial buildings and very large roof areas. Call (949) 994-4410 or book online.
The right gutter size is the one that keeps up on the worst day of the year, not an average one. In South Orange County that day arrives in winter, when concrete and clay tile roofs unload a storm into the gutter and hillside homes in Laguna Niguel and Rancho Santa Margarita need every drop carried well away from the slope. Properly sized seamless gutters catch that water and send it clear of stucco walls and foundations before it can cause damage.
Gutter sizing in South Orange County
Which gutter size each part of your house needs
Size is decided section by section, not once for the whole house. Use this guide to see where your roof probably lands, then open the page for that size.
Most South County homes are not one roof. A two-story village home in Irvine has a main roof, a lower roof over the garage or family room, and often a valley where two tile planes meet. Each of those sections sends a different amount of water to a different stretch of gutter, so each one gets its own size call.
That is why so many systems we install mix sizes. Small, simple sections stay 5 inch. The sections that take the hardest hit, such as big tile planes, valleys, lower roofs catching water from above and runs past 60 feet, move up to 6 inch. And 7 inch is held back for commercial roofs and very large homes where even 6 inch spills. Every size is formed on site in the same colors, so a mixed system still looks like one system from the street.
Before we upsize anything, we rule out the cheaper fixes. A clog, a missing downspout or a run that has lost its slope can make a correctly sized gutter overflow just like an undersized one.
Size by size at a glance
| Size | Downspouts | Where it usually goes in South County | Rule of thumb |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 inch gutters | 2×3, or 3×4 on larger areas | Single-story ranch eaves in Costa Mesa and Lake Forest, garages, porch roofs and small sections | Nothing drains into it from above, and it holds in average rain |
| 6 inch gutters | 3×4 | Large tile planes, valleys, lower roofs fed from above, hillside homes, metal roofs | Runs over 60 feet, or over 40 feet with room for only one downspout |
| 7 inch gutters | Oversized | Commercial buildings and very large tile roofs draining to one run | A clean 6 inch system still overflows in normal rain |
| Larger than 7 inch | Planned per building | Large commercial gutter systems | Ask your Solutionist about oversized options |
Overflowing? Rule these out before upsizing
- Leaves or grit in the trough, or a plugged downspout outlet. A gutter cleaning costs far less than new gutters.
- One downspout on a run longer than 40 feet.
- A run that has sagged or pulled away from the fascia and now holds water in the middle. That is a gutter repair, not a size problem.
- Water shooting past the gutter at an inside valley on a tile roof, where rain arrives fast and all in one spot.
- A lower gutter carrying an upper roof’s water on top of its own.
- Spilling along the whole length right after a cleaning. That one does point to size.
Where the water goes after the gutter
Catching the storm is only half the job. On hillside lots in Laguna Niguel, Laguna Beach, Aliso Viejo and Rancho Santa Margarita, a bigger gutter means more water arriving at each downspout at once. If that water lands against a stucco wall or at the top of a slope, the larger gutter has only moved the problem. We plan outlets with the size, and where the ground calls for it, pair them with underground gutter drainage that carries the water away from walls, walkways and hillsides.
Size, profile and metal are chosen together
The size you need is set by the roof. The profile and metal are set by the house. Every size we form comes as a seamless gutter made on site, and your Solutionist settles all three at the same visit so the quote you get is the system that actually goes up.

Why the Brothers
Why South County Homeowners Call the Brothers
We size from the roof in front of us. Swapping in the same size the builder used is how overflow problems last for decades.
If a few extra downspouts solve it, that is what we recommend. Upsizing the whole house is only on the table when the roof calls for it.
Our recommendations assume a hard winter storm, not a drizzle. That is what keeps water off the stucco and out of the planter beds.

Plenty of single-story and smaller two-story homes do fine with 5 inch. Tile roofs are everywhere in South County, though, and large or steep tile roofs, long runs and lower roofs that catch an upper roof’s water usually call for 6 inch, which carries roughly 40 percent more. 7 inch is reserved for commercial buildings and very large roof areas, and we measure before recommending any of them.
Watch them in a hard rain. Water sheeting over the front edge along the whole run, even right after a cleaning, points to an undersized gutter. A clog spills at one spot, while a gutter that is too small spills everywhere. Lower roofs fed by an upper gutter are usually where it shows up first.
Four things: the shape of the roofline, the roof’s surface area, its pitch and the local climate. A big, steep roof delivers more water, faster, than a small, low one. When only some sections need extra capacity, two sizes on one house is often the most cost-effective fix.
A good rule is one downspout for a run under 40 feet and two for a run over 40 feet. If a long run can only have one, that alone is a reason to step up to 6 inch. Sometimes a downspout added in the right place cures an overflow without touching the gutter.
We form 5, 6 and 7 inch seamless gutters on site and choose between them from your roof’s area, pitch and how water collects, not from whatever the house had before. If a building needs something larger than 7 inch, ask your Solutionist about oversized options.
Because our rain comes in bunches. After months with little or none, a single winter storm can deliver a big share of the season’s rain, and the gutter has to handle that peak. NOAA’s El Niño Advisory this winter makes a wetter season possible. A gutter that looks fine all summer can still overflow in the first real storm.
