Quick answer
Fascia Board in Irvine and South Orange County, CA: The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Irvine replaces rotted, split or water-damaged fascia board, or wraps it in aluminum, then rehangs the gutter on new hangers so it holds through the rainy season. Call (949) 994-4410 or book online.
Fascia, sometimes called soffit board, is the horizontal board along the roof edge that covers the ends of the rafters. It can be wood, a wood substitute or metal, and together with the soffit it closes off the attic. It is also what your gutter hangs on.
On South County homes, fascia usually fails quietly. A leaking seam or a gutter that overflows from the back sends water down the face of the board for years, and on older ranch homes in Costa Mesa or houses near the coast under the marine layer, the wood stays damp long enough to soften. When a gutter starts to sag or pull away, rotted fascia is often the reason, so we fix the board before the gutter goes back up. Our gutter repair page covers the other half of that job.

What the board behind your gutter is carrying, and how to keep it sound
On a tile roof, fascia holds more than the gutter. Here is what we check, why rot hides where it does, and what each fix involves.
On many South County homes the fascia carries two loads at once. One is the gutter, which in a winter storm is full of water and wet debris. The other is the bottom row of roof tile. A board that softens loses its grip on both, which is why a gutter that has started to wave between hangers deserves a look before the rainy season, not after it.
Rot usually starts where nobody can see it. Water that gets behind the back edge of the gutter runs down the face of the board, right where the hangers are screwed in, and the gutter itself covers the damage. On coastal homes under the marine layer, that wood can stay damp for days even between storms.
How a gutter is fastened matters too. A hanger screwed into a fascia board bites across the grain and holds well. A hanger driven into the end grain of an open rafter tail holds far less, which is one reason we would rather add fascia than hang a gutter off rafter ends.
What we look for when the gutter comes down
- Screw holes that have widened, or wood that crumbles around them.
- Dark staining or soft spots along the line where the gutter’s back edge sat.
- Splits at the corners, where two boards meet and water collects.
- Paint peeling in a band just below the roof edge.
- Damage at the ends of exposed rafter tails.
- Gaps between the fascia and soffit where birds or insects can reach the attic.
Wrap, replace or build out
| What we find | What we recommend | What it involves |
|---|---|---|
| Board is solid, but the surface is weathered | Aluminum fascia wrap | A metal face formed over the existing wood in the size that fits, then the gutter goes back up on new hangers. |
| Soft or rotted sections | Replace the damaged board | Rotted lengths come out, new board goes in, and the gutter is rehung and pitched to its downspouts. |
| Open rafter tails under a tile roof | Build out the overhang and add fascia | Gives the gutter a horizontal board to fasten into, without disturbing the tile. |
| Open rafter tails under a shingle roof, fascia not possible | Roof straps | Straps hook into a hidden hanger and fasten on the roof. Strong, though not as strong as fascia, and more visible. |
| Soffit damaged or missing | Perforated vinyl soffit | Closes off the underside of the eave, keeps pests out and lets air move through the attic. |
Why soffit belongs in the conversation
Soffit runs from the bottom of the fascia back to the wall. With the fascia it closes off the rafters, and when it is vented it lets air flow through the attic, which helps keep the attic cooler in the summer months. Open eaves with no fascia or soffit tend to let birds, insects and other animals find their way in. If yours is cracked, stained from an old gutter leak or missing, we can install perforated vinyl soffit while the gutter is down.
Homes where we find fascia trouble most
Older ranch homes in Costa Mesa and parts of Mission Viejo and Lake Forest often still have their original boards, and years of back-edge overflow add up. Coastal homes from Newport Beach to Dana Point see wood stay damp under the marine layer. Spanish and Mediterranean homes in San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano sometimes have exposed rafter tails and need the overhang built out before a gutter can go on. In every case, the source of the water gets fixed through gutter repair or a new seamless gutter, so the new board is not soaked all over again. Fascia is one part of our exterior solutions, and we handle it for homes in Irvine and across South Orange County.

The run is pitched to the downspout and water-tested, and the area is cleaned before we leave.
Why the Brothers
Why Irvine and South OC Homeowners Call the Brothers
Rehanging a gutter on soft wood only buys a season or two. We replace the board first so the new hangers have something to grip.
Most South County roofs are tile, which rules out roof straps. We know when to build out the overhang and add fascia instead.
When the wood is sound enough, aluminum wrap is the lighter option. When it is not, we say so and show you why.
Sara Baayoun owns the territory and holds her crews to clean, careful finish work. That is the standard HOA neighborhoods expect along every roof edge.

It is the anchor. Gutter hangers screw into the fascia, and a sound board carries the full weight of a gutter loaded with rain and wet debris. When the wood softens, the hangers loosen and the whole run starts to drift.
Often you cannot tell without taking the gutter down. If water has been getting between the gutter and the board for a while, there is a good chance it is rotted. Peeling paint, wood that gives under a thumb and a gutter that dips between hangers are other clues, and a Solutionist will check during the free estimate.
Yes. Aluminum fascia wrap comes in multiple sizes and covers sound wood with a metal face. When the board is too far gone, we replace it instead, and either way the gutter goes back up on new hangers.
Yes, but not with roof straps. On open rafter tails, gutters can be hung with straps that hook into a hidden hanger and fasten onto the roof, which is strong though not as strong as fascia. Straps are not recommended on slate, tile or cedar shingle roofs, and tile covers most of South Orange County, including the Spanish and Mediterranean homes in San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano. On those, the better route is building out the overhang and adding fascia.
Indirectly. Along the coast from Newport Beach to Dana Point, salt air works on gutter fasteners and hangers, and a hanger that corrodes and loosens lets the gutter tilt and spill water down the face of the board. Replacing tired hardware and keeping the gutter tight against solid fascia breaks that cycle.
Yes. If your soffit needs replacing or the home has none, we install perforated vinyl soffit. Vented soffit lets air move through the attic, which helps on hot inland afternoons when the attic heats up.
