A gutter has one job: move roof water away from the house. The problems we run into most around South Orange County are leaks at seams and corners, runs that sag or pull away, overflow in the middle of a run and water pooling along the stucco. Near the coast in Dana Point and San Clemente, salt air adds one more, slowly working on fasteners, hangers and hardware until a run lets go.
Repair, cleaning and guards work together, and sometimes the honest answer is a new installation instead of another patch. We will tell you which one makes sense and why.

Reading the damage: what to fix, and when a patch stops making sense
Gutter problems are easy to misdiagnose, because the damage usually shows up a few feet from the cause. Here are the clues we follow around a stucco house.
A failing gutter rarely announces itself at the gutter. It shows up as a line worn into the mulch bed, paint flaking near the base of the wall, a garage door that stays dark along the bottom after a storm, or a crack opening in the walkway under a corner. By the time the gutter visibly sags, the water has usually been landing in the wrong place for a while.
Our long dry spells hide problems, too. A seam can start leaking or a hanger can back out in July and nobody knows until the first winter storm sends water over the side. That is why we would rather find them in early fall, when a repair is a scheduled visit and not an emergency.
Quiet warning signs around the house
- A spike head backing out of the front of the gutter.
- A line cut into the landscaping or mulch right under the roof edge.
- Mildew or staining on walls below a gutter, or below where one should be.
- Rot at the bottom of garage doors, door frames, windowsills or deck boards.
- Cracking or heaving in walkways, patios, driveways or steps near downspouts.
- Paint flaking early near the base of the stucco.
- A dip or back pitch you can spot by sighting down the gutter from one end.
Repair or replace
| What we find | Usually a repair | Usually time to replace |
|---|---|---|
| Leaking seams or corners | One or two joints resealed or an end cap replaced | Leaks at joint after joint along an old sectional gutter |
| Sagging between hangers | New hidden hangers screwed into sound fascia | Sagging along the whole run on soft wood, which means fascia board replacement and a rehang |
| Overflow in the middle of a run | Re-pitching the run or adding a downspout | A gutter too small for the roof area it serves |
| Corroded hardware near the coast | Hangers, fasteners and end caps swapped for new | Rust or cracks in the gutter itself |
| Repairs several times a year | Rarely worth another patch | A new seamless gutter with no mid-run seams usually costs less over time |
A three-minute check during the next rain
- Find where it overflows.Right beside a downspout usually points to a clog. In the middle of the run or at the far end points to pitch, size or a failed hanger.
- Look at the bottom of each downspout.A strong flow is good. A trickle or nothing at all means a blockage. If it feeds an underground drain, check for a wet patch around the opening.
- Look behind the gutter.Water running between the gutter and the fascia means a back-edge problem, and the board behind it may already be soft. Take a photo and send it with your request.
Plenty of overflow calls end with a gutter cleaning rather than a repair, and we will tell you which one you need. Once it is fixed, our maintenance program catches the next loose hanger while it is still small. Our crews handle repairs across South Orange County, from Costa Mesa and Mission Viejo to Dana Point and San Clemente.

Overflow mid-run, or at the end away from the downspout, usually means a repair issue rather than a clog. The gutter may be pitched the wrong way, too small for the roof area, short a downspout or sagging where a hanger has failed. Overflow right next to the downspout is more often a blockage that a cleaning will fix.
It wears on them. In Newport Beach, Dana Point and San Clemente, the marine layer and salt air keep working on fasteners, hangers and end caps, and those small parts usually show it first. We replace corroded hardware as part of the repair, and if the gutter itself is breaking down, the estimate will say so.
Yes. We reseal seams, corners and end caps, and we will be straight with you when a sectional gutter has too many joints to keep patching. At that point, switching to seamless gutters formed on site removes the mid-run seams for good.
It is the older way of hanging gutters: a long spike driven through the gutter and a sleeve into the fascia. If you own one of the older ranch homes in Costa Mesa or Mission Viejo, check for it. Gutters hung this way are likely around 20 years old, the fascia behind them may be rotting, and a spike head backing out of the gutter is a sign the system is working loose.
Installed well and kept clean, or protected with guards, a gutter system can last up to 30 years. Neglected gutters tend to fail somewhere between 10 and 15. Long dry spells that pack debris into the trough, followed by heavy winter rain, are exactly the cycle that shortens that life.
Yes. When storms are in the forecast, overflow calls and runs pulling away from the house get priority. The cheaper move is fixing loose hangers and leaky seams in early fall, before the first big storm. If water is already going where it should not, call (949) 994-4410.

Why the Brothers
Why South County Homeowners Call the Brothers
A Solutionist is there to diagnose, not to sell. If a few new hangers will fix it, you will not be pitched a whole new system.
Homes near the water deal with salt air on every metal fastener. We look for that wear on each visit and replace it before it fails.
The people repairing your gutter also install new ones, so they know when a fix will hold. That keeps the advice grounded.
