Gutters for Laguna Beach cottages and canyon hillsides

Laguna Beach is a town of canyons and cottages. Early 1900s Craftsman bungalows still dot downtown and South Laguna, a 1980 to 1981 survey counted 706 historically significant homes and structures, and about 42 percent of today’s housing was built before 1960. Above them, homes climb out of Laguna Canyon and Bluebird Canyon, up through Arch Beach and on to Top of the World, where Temple Hill reaches 1,007 feet. That range puts very different roofs in front of the same weather: small cottages with old wood fascia close to the sand, and large hillside houses whose roof water has a long way to fall.

That fall is the part we watch. The NOAA normal at the Laguna Beach station is 12.68 inches a year, and February alone averages 3.39. After a wet January and February in 2005, the slope in Bluebird Canyon moved on June 1, and USGS counted 15 homes damaged or destroyed. Gutters do not hold up a hillside, but on a canyon lot every downspout should end where the property’s drainage is designed to take it, never on a bare slope or behind a retaining wall. The rest of the picture is familiar along this coast: eucalyptus and sycamore leaves from the canyons, palm litter, and salt air working on every hanger and screw.

The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Irvine is owned by Sara Baayoun and locally operated, and our crews work across Laguna Beach from the canyon to South Laguna. We form seamless runs on site in aluminum, copper or bonderized steel, clean by hand, swap corroded hardware, repair cottage fascia and install BroGuard micro-mesh. On tight, steep lots we plan downspouts and underground drainage around the stairs, decks and walls that make Laguna properties what they are. Homeowners in Laguna Niguel next door get the same crew. Estimates are free and written.

Laguna Beach Gutter Questions, Answered

My Laguna Beach house sits on a canyon slope. Where should the roof water go?

Into the drainage the property was designed with: a buried line, a lined swale or a street outlet, never onto a bare slope or behind a retaining wall. Laguna Beach canyons have a history of slope movement after very wet winters, so concentrated roof water deserves a planned path. We trace each downspout’s route with you and write up the fix, and we will tell you when a question belongs to a civil or geotechnical engineer.

Can you put gutters on an old Laguna Beach cottage without changing its look?

Yes. Cottages downtown and in South Laguna often have rafter ends showing and trim boards that have taken a century of sea air. We fix any soft wood before hanging anything, then form a seamless run that hugs the eave. Copper weathers to a deep brown that suits older homes, and colored aluminum can disappear against the trim. You approve the profile and color first.

How does the ocean air affect my gutters?

The gutter is usually the last thing to go. Ocean air works on the small metal first: screws, rivets, brackets and end caps. By the time a Laguna Beach run visibly droops, the hidden fasteners have often been rusting for years. We test each bracket by hand, swap the weak ones and use coast-rated hardware so the run stays tight.

Is copper a good choice for a Laguna Beach home?

It can be. Copper handles salt air well, does not need paint and suits many custom and older homes in town. It starts bright, turns brown and can move toward a green patina over the years. It costs more than aluminum, so at the estimate we can price both side by side and you can choose.

Should I prepare my Laguna Beach gutters for El Niño?

It is a good year for it. NOAA’s El Niño Advisory points to a wetter winter, and Laguna’s February average is already the highest of any month. Before the storms we clear canyon leaves from every run, run a hose through each downspout, tighten or replace weak brackets and walk each outlet’s path, which counts most on slopes and in the canyons.
